What to Wear for Portraits
That Feel Effortless

Simple guidance for choosing outfits that photograph naturally

Start with what you already love wearing... we'll refine everything from there. This guide walks you through how to think about color, coordination, and bringing it all together so your session feels relaxed and true to your family.

Where to Start
My Approach to Styling

The goal isn't perfectly matched outfits — it's creating a look that feels natural, cohesive, and true to your family. When everything comes together thoughtfully, your images feel effortless instead of styled.

Coordination over matching
Choose pieces that complement each other rather than repeating the same outfit. This creates depth and keeps your images from feeling flat.
Movement over stiffness
Flowy fabrics, soft layers, and natural textures bring life into your images. The more movement, the more natural the final result.
Timeless over trendy
Classic, understated pieces ensure your images feel just as beautiful years from now. Skip the logos, bold graphics, and anything too seasonal.
You, just elevated
You should still feel like yourself — just the most confident, comfortable version of you. If you're not comfortable in it at home, you won't love it in photos.
Step One
Choose a Color Palette

If you're not sure where to start, begin with a single color or tone you love and build from there. Lighter tones feel fresh in spring and summer; richer, deeper tones feel more natural in fall and winter. You can also browse real color palettes at Design Seeds for inspiration.

Here are four combinations that photograph beautifully and work across seasons:

Neutral and denim family portrait example
Neutrals + Denim
Cream, white, beige, soft gray, and denim. The most effortless and timeless combination — works in every season and keeps the focus on connection, not clothing.
Dark and bold family portrait example
Dark + Bold Tones
Deep charcoal, black, rich browns, and strong neutrals. More editorial and intentional while still timeless — perfect for a dramatic, refined look.
Soft neutral family portrait example
Soft Neutrals
Ivory, sand, taupe, and muted blush. Light, airy, and perfect for a softer, more emotional feel in your images.
Muted color accent family portrait example
Muted Color Accents
Soft sage, dusty blue, muted mustard, or blush paired with neutrals. Just enough color to add personality while keeping everything cohesive.
If you're unsure where to start, pull a few pieces from your closet in similar tones and lay them out together. You'll usually notice a theme very quickly... it's almost always simpler than it feels at first.
Step Two
How to Coordinate Your Family

Once your palette is set, these four steps help everything come together across your family in a way that feels balanced and intentional — without anyone looking like they got dressed in the same store.

1
Start with one outfit
Choose one person's outfit first — often mom's, or the most structured look in the group. This becomes your anchor for everything else and makes all the remaining decisions much easier.
2
Build around a shared palette
Pull colors from the same family as your anchor outfit. Not everyone needs the same colors — just tones that relate to each other. Think shades and complements, not duplicates.
3
Vary, don't match
Mix textures, shades, and silhouettes so each person feels individual while still visually connected as a group. Variation adds depth — identical outfits read flat in photos.
4
Keep it simple
Avoid bold logos, neon colors, or overly busy patterns. Allow one outfit to lead visually while the rest support it — simplicity keeps the focus where it belongs... on your family.
