Is A Professional Hair and Makeup Artist Needed For Your Headshot? Fotoplicity's Answer May Surprise You.

If you start searching for headshot services, you will find that many photographers will include professional hair & makeup service as part of their session. At Fotoplicity, it isn’t. Why? Because I don’t think it’s necessary. As a matter of fact, I have talked many clients out of it. Yeah…really!

Let me explain my why:

The Purpose Behind A Headshot

Headshots are an essential component of the first impression a person makes on the people they meet and interact with. From job interviews, to business meetings, to marketing campaigns – a headshot is often the first glimpse that a customer or employer has of you. So it's important to ensure that your headshot represents and showcases your personality and individual qualities in an honest and genuine way. In today's digital world, it is extremely important to ensure that the image you present is truly reflective of who you are.

An Accurate Representation of You

I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a HMUA (hair & makeup artist) prepping me for my day everyday. An authentic headshot can only be achieved when you embrace your natural beauty and allow the camera to capture your everyday YOU.

By embracing your natural beauty, you will be able to look and feel confident in our own skin. Natural beauty isn’t about hair and makeup as much as it is about finding the confidence in being true to yourself.

How Showcase Your Authentic Self for your Headshot

ONE: Recognize the unique qualities that make you special and flaunt them without fear or insecurity. Seeing yourself through a lens of self-love will help boost your confidence levels and allow you to live life more freely.

TWO: Dress Confidently. Choose colors that compliment your skin tone. Opt for outfits that make you feel amazing. The more confident you feel, the more confident your headshots will be!

THREE: Maintain Your Regular Beauty Routine. While you don’t need an HMUA for your Headshot Session, that doesn’t mean skipping your normal routine. Be sure to moisturize your face and follow up with applying makeup and styling hair as you normally would for work. For those of you who work from home in your pjs and a messy bun (I’m guilty), instead, prep yourself the same way you would for a nice dinner out with your friends.

FOUR: Trust Your Photographer. A great headshot photographer should be well versed in posing, have a great portfolio and should be willing to listen to your feedback as well as provide honest feedback to you. This detailed and honest feedback requires trust!

The Bottom Line

Skip the HMUA. You just don’t need it. Authenticity is the most important thing when it comes to headshots. Show up to your headshot session as everyday, confident YOU. And don’t worry about that pimple or the dark circles under your eyes - your photographer can touch that up later.
